Update — Aug. 25, 2026: The partnership lasted one match. Sabalenka and Djokovic were beaten in the first round on Arthur Ashe Stadium by Katerina Siniakova and Henry Patten, 1-4, 4-2, 10-2, in 48 minutes. They took the opening set quickly and led early in the second before losing it, then won two points in the match tiebreak; Siniakova finished the match with an ace past Djokovic. Siniakova and Patten are the No. 1-ranked doubles players on their respective tours and had come through Monday’s qualifying, entering this section of the draw only after Frances Tiafoe withdrew. Both Sabalenka and Djokovic now turn to the singles main draw, which begins Sunday.
Update — Aug. 24, 2026: Sabalenka and Djokovic are the No. 1 seeds and have drawn wild cards Leylah Fernandez and Frances Tiafoe in the first round, two days after Tiafoe lost the Cincinnati final. They would meet Elina Svitolina and Gael Monfils or Alexandra Eala and Felix Auger-Aliassime in the quarterfinals, and cannot face Serena Williams and Carlos Alcaraz before the semifinals — the full draw is broken down here.
Update — Aug. 23, 2026: The USTA has now published the full schedule and format. Qualifying is an eight-team draw on Grandstand from 11 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 24, free to attend with a Fan Access Pass. The main-draw first round and quarterfinals follow on Tuesday, Aug. 25, in Arthur Ashe Stadium from 11 a.m. and Louis Armstrong Stadium from 10 a.m., with the Armstrong matches free to attend. Semifinals and the final are in Ashe from 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 26. Matches from qualifying through the semifinals are best-of-three with sets to four games and no-ad scoring, a tiebreak at four-all and a 10-point tiebreak in place of a third set; the final uses sets to six. Sabalenka and Djokovic remain in the field. The winning team shares $1 million.
Update — Aug. 19, 2026: The pairing is confirmed in the 16-team main draw, played Tuesday, Aug. 25 and Wednesday, Aug. 26, with an eight-team qualifying draw the day before. NEW YORK — Novak Djokovic and Aryna Sabalenka have entered the 2026 US Open Mixed Doubles Championship as a team, heading an initial list of 16 pairings released by tournament organisers on Monday.
The entry puts the 24-time Grand Slam singles champion alongside the world No. 1, who has won the last two US Open women’s singles titles. The two have played together once before, in a charity exhibition on Rod Laver Arena ahead of the 2024 Australian Open.
The dates. The championship runs from Monday 24 August to Wednesday 26 August, in the week before the singles main draw begins. Qualifying is played on 24 August. The main draw opens on 25 August with the first round and quarterfinals, and the semifinals and final are held on 26 August. Every main-draw match is scheduled for Arthur Ashe Stadium or Louis Armstrong Stadium.
The format. Matches up to the final are best-of-three with sets shortened to four games, no-advantage scoring and a tiebreak at four-all. A 10-point match tiebreak replaces the third set. The final is played to six games a set with tiebreaks at six-all, and also substitutes a 10-point match tiebreak for a deciding set. The winning pair takes $1 million.
How teams get in. The entry window closes at noon Eastern on 17 August. At that point the six teams with the best combined singles ranking are accepted directly into the 16-team main draw. The USTA allocates eight wild cards, to be announced later. The remaining two places go to the winners of an eight-team qualifying draw — itself made up of six direct entries and two wild cards — played on 24 August.
Qualifying is new for 2026. It was added after doubles specialists objected to a revamp that shortened the field and moved the event out of the main draw, which they argued reduced a Grand Slam title to a showcase for singles players. Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori, who won the 2025 edition for their second straight US Open mixed doubles title, were the only established doubles team in that field and needed a wild card to enter as defending champions. They have entered again, as have Katerina Siniakova and Henry Patten.
Both players arrive with different histories in the event. Djokovic played the 2025 championship with Olga Danilovic on a wild card and lost in the first round to Mirra Andreeva and Daniil Medvedev. Sabalenka did not enter that edition at all, though she raised the possibility of this pairing in January, telling reporters in Melbourne she was waiting on Djokovic. She joked that she was still waiting for “that long message from him.”
Djokovic, 39 and ranked No. 5, remains in pursuit of a 25th major singles title, which would move him clear of Margaret Court’s record. That pursuit runs through the singles draw, which begins the following week, rather than through this event. Six of the top 10 in both the ATP and WTA rankings have entered.
Update, Aug. 3: Speaking to reporters in Toronto ahead of the Canadian Open, Sabalenka set the partnership’s ambition explicitly, saying she and Djokovic are going after the title rather than treating the two-day event as an exhibition. She noted she has played mixed doubles at a major only once before and described the pairing as likely to be both enjoyable and intense. The comments are her first substantive remarks on the team since the entry list was published, and they arrive with the partnership still short of formal confirmation: entries do not close until Aug. 17, when the six teams with the best combined singles rankings take the automatic main-draw places.
