Wheelchair Tennis Finals Guide — Barcelona Dates, Field, Format and Recent Champions

The NEC Wheelchair Singles Finals and UNIQLO Wheelchair Doubles Finals close the UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis Tour season, bringing the top men’s, women’s and quad players together for the last titles of the year. The 2026 edition runs from 9 to 15 November in Barcelona, and it is the first under the new name: until 2025 the two events were the NEC Wheelchair Singles Masters and the UNIQLO Wheelchair Doubles Masters. The change was approved at the 2026 World Tennis AGM in Almaty.

For how the sport itself works, from the two-bounce rule to the quad division, see our wheelchair tennis rules explainer.

Dates and Venue

The Finals are played at the Centre Internacional de Tennis de Cornellà, the performance headquarters of the Catalan Tennis Federation, which hosts the event. It is the first wheelchair tennis event at the venue. The tournament is listed on outdoor hard courts, with prize money of $160,000.

It is the second time in four years that Barcelona has staged the season-ending championships. The 2023 edition was played on clay at the Emilio Sanchez Academy. The 2026 Finals also fall in the 50th anniversary year of wheelchair tennis, which Brad Parks founded in California in 1976.

Who Qualifies

Entry is based on the UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis Rankings. For 2026 the cut-off was the ranking list of 28 September. Each singles event takes eight players, and each doubles event takes six partnerships, in the men’s, women’s and quad divisions.

Format

In 2025 the eight players in each singles event were drawn into two groups of four. After four days of round-robin matches, the top two in each group went through to the semifinals. The doubles finals were played on the Saturday and the singles finals on the closing Sunday.

History

The singles championship was first held in Eindhoven in the Netherlands in 1994, and NEC has been its title sponsor from the start. It left the Netherlands for the first time in 2011 and has since been staged in Belgium, China, Great Britain, the USA and Spain.

The doubles championship began in 2000, alongside the singles in Amersfoort, and became a standalone event in 2003. It has been hosted in five countries, and UNIQLO became its title sponsor in 2014. When Barcelona held both in 2023, Spain became the third country, after the Netherlands and the USA, to stage the two events together.

2025 Champions

The 2025 championships went to China for the first time, at the Huzhou International Clay Tennis Center in Zhejiang Province.

  • Men’s singles: Tokito Oda d. Alfie Hewett 6-1, 6-1, his third title
  • Women’s singles: Yui Kamiji d. Li Xiaohui 6-2, 6-2, her third title
  • Quad singles: Sam Schroder d. Guy Sasson 6-4, 6-3, his second title
  • Men’s doubles: Martin de la Puente and Ruben Spaargaren d. Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid
  • Women’s doubles: Yui Kamiji and Zhu Zhenzhen d. Li Xiaohui and Wang Ziying 1-6, 6-0, 10-8
  • Quad doubles: Guy Sasson and Niels Vink

Zhu became the first Chinese player to win a title at the season-ending championships. De la Puente won the men’s doubles for the third time in four years, and Vink was part of the winning quad doubles partnership for the sixth straight year. Oda’s third singles title put him alongside Hewett and Shingo Kunieda among the players to have won three singles titles; Kunieda is on the International Tennis Hall of Fame ballot for the Class of 2027.

Players to Watch

Tokito Oda and Alfie Hewett. The top two men on the entry list met in the 2025 final. That was Hewett’s sixth singles final at the season-ending championships since 2017. Hewett and Reid, three-time doubles champions, enter as the top-ranked men’s pair.

Martin de la Puente and Daniel Caverzaschi. The home players won Spain’s first Paralympic wheelchair tennis medal together, a bronze in the men’s doubles at Paris 2024. De la Puente is a former Wimbledon men’s singles finalist and US Open doubles champion, and he ended 2022 as the year-end No. 1 in men’s doubles after his first doubles title at the season-ending event. In Barcelona he plays singles and partners Spaargaren again; Caverzaschi plays doubles with Tom Egberink.

Yui Kamiji and Diede de Groot. Kamiji has won the last two women’s singles titles. De Groot, second on the 2026 entry list, was not in the 2025 field.

Niels Vink and Sam Schroder. The two Dutch players split the four quad singles titles before 2025 and won the quad doubles together for four straight years. In 2025 they played doubles with different partners, and Sasson beat Vink in the singles semifinals.
