Orange Bowl Tennis Guide — J500 Dates, Entry Deadlines, Draws, Points and Every Champion Since Federer

The Orange Bowl International Tennis Championships are the last big junior event of the year in the United States. The 18-and-under boys’ and girls’ events are a J500 tournament on the ITF World Tennis Tour Juniors, the second-highest grade below the four junior Grand Slams, and they are played on outdoor clay at the Jimmy Evert Tennis Center at Holiday Park in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The 16-and-under championships are played alongside them.

This guide covers the 2026 dates and deadlines, how the draws work, what the event is worth in junior ranking points, the venue, and the champions who went on to win at the top of the sport. The year-specific details are collected in the dated Season Snapshot at the end.

Dates and Schedule

The ITF fact sheet for the J500 lists singles qualifying from Saturday, 5 December 2026 and the singles main draws from Monday, 7 December to Sunday, 13 December. Qualifiers must sign in by 18:00 local time on 4 December. There is no sign-in for the main draw. The Orange Bowl Committee lists the championships as a whole, including the 16s, as running from 4 to 13 December.

Junior events run on fixed entry deadlines rather than invitations. For the 2026 J500, the singles entry deadline is Tuesday, 17 November at 14:00 GMT and the withdrawal deadline is Tuesday, 24 November at 14:00 GMT. Players are accepted by their ITF junior ranking as of the Monday before the entry deadline, with a number of places reserved for wild cards and qualifiers. How those grades and acceptance rules work across the junior tour is explained in our guide to ITF junior tournament grades.

Draws and Format

Each 18s singles event has a 64-player main draw and a 64-player qualifying draw. Each doubles event has 32 teams. Singles is a straight elimination draw, so a champion wins six matches; our explainer on how to read a tennis draw covers the seeding and section markings. Players who lose in the last round of qualifying are first in line as lucky losers if a main-draw place opens up.

Under the 2026 ITF junior regulations, main-draw singles matches are the best of three sets with a tiebreak in each. Qualifying matches are two tiebreak sets with a 10-point match tiebreak in place of a third set. Doubles uses two tiebreak sets, a match tiebreak and no-ad scoring; the general rules of the format are in our guide to doubles. The no-let rule applies to every match.

Off-court coaching is permitted at J500 events in both qualifying and the main draw, under the ITF’s off-court coaching procedures; on-court coaching is not. The wider picture on what coaches may and may not do is in our tennis coaching rules explainer. The official ball is the Wilson US Open (Type 2).

A J500 also carries presentation requirements that lower grades do not. Live streaming on two courts is mandatory from the quarterfinals, live scoring is required for every match with a chair umpire, the main show court must seat or allow viewing for at least 250 people, and ball persons are required for the finals. The officiating structure, from the ITF supervisor to the chair umpires used in the later rounds, is set out in our explainer on tennis officials.

Ranking Points

The grade name is the champion’s points. An Orange Bowl singles title is worth 500 ITF junior ranking points, half the 1,000 on offer at a junior Grand Slam. The full J500 table:

  • Singles: winner 500, finalist 350, semifinalist 250, quarterfinalist 150, round of 16 90, round of 32 45.
  • Doubles: winners 375, finalists 262, semifinalists 187, quarterfinalists 112, round of 16 67.

No points are awarded until a player wins a main-draw round. A first-round bye does not count as a win; a walkover or an opponent’s retirement does. Strong junior results feed the year-end World Tennis Tour Junior Finals, and the professional pathways that follow, including the PIF ATP Next Gen Accelerator, the ATP Challenger Tour and the WTA 125 tier.

The Venue

The Jimmy Evert Tennis Center is at 701 NE 12th Ave, Fort Lauderdale, a public facility in Holiday Park named for Jimmy Evert, Chris Evert’s father. The Orange Bowl moved there in 2025 after a $9.5 million renovation carried out by the City of Fort Lauderdale, the Orange Bowl Committee and the USTA, and the centre was reopened on 8 December 2025 with the dedication of the 700-seat Chris Evert Stadium Court. The Orange Bowl Committee has said the centre will remain the permanent home of the championships.

History

The tournament was founded in 1947 by Eddie Herr of Miami Beach, who started it on the public clay courts at Flamingo Park because his daughter Suzanne had few events to play. Lew McMasters of St. Petersburg won the first boys’ 18s title and Joan Johnson won the first girls’ 18s title. Melita Ramirez of Mexico won the girls’ 18s in 1948, and Carlos Fernandes of Brazil became the first foreign boys’ champion in 1956. Winners have since come from more than 20 nations.

The Orange Bowl is not the same event as the Junior Orange Bowl, which is a separate tournament for the 12-and-under and 14-and-under age groups. The 2026 Junior Orange Bowl is scheduled for 12 to 19 December in the Miami area.
