On the last Sunday of October 2025, Alexander Zverev lost the Vienna final to Jannik Sinner 3-6, 6-3, 7-5. Five days later in Paris, he saved two match points to beat Daniil Medvedev late on Friday night. On Saturday afternoon he played Sinner again and lost 6-0, 6-1 in 62 minutes. “He had a very tight schedule in the past months,” Sinner said. “Yesterday, incredible match he won. Two match points down, it’s also difficult mentally and obviously also physically.”
That is the European indoor season: the last stretch of the men’s tour, four weeks of tournaments in arenas between the end of the Asian swing and the ATP Finals in Turin, with the ranking race to Turin running through all of it.
How it is built. The block starts the Monday after the Shanghai Masters ends. The first week has three ATP 250 events. The second week has two ATP 500 events side by side, the Swiss Indoors in Basel and the Erste Bank Open in Vienna. The third week is the Rolex Paris Masters, the last Masters 1000 of the year and the only one played indoors. A final ATP 250 week follows before Turin.
Paris moved in 2025 from the Accor Arena in Bercy to La Defense Arena in Nanterre, west of the city. It keeps a 56-player draw over a single week, unlike the 96-player, 12-day format now used at most Masters events.
Why indoors changes the tennis. There is no wind, no sun and no rain, so nothing interferes with the toss. Players talk about indoor courts in terms of the serve. When Lorenzo Sonego beat world No. 1 Novak Djokovic 6-2, 6-1 in Vienna in 2020, he said of the court: “It’s so fast for my serve.” Before this year’s Davis Cup tie in Quebec City, France captain Paul-Henri Mathieu said he had picked “players who also play very, very well indoors” because the surface was fairly quick. Felix Auger-Aliassime then described the conditions as ones in which Quentin Halys‘s “service game becomes an even bigger weapon”. Some players build their autumn around these weeks. Sinner went into the 2025 Paris final on a 25-match winning streak on indoor hard courts, according to the ATP Tour, won it against Auger-Aliassime, and then won the ATP Finals. Others arrive from outside the Asian swing. Joao Fonseca skipped Asia in 2025 through illness. “We didn’t go to Asia this year, I was a little bit sick,” he said in Basel, where he won his first ATP 500 title at 19. He was the tournament’s youngest champion since Jim Courier in 1989.
Why it matters. Points, at the last possible moment. Eight singles players qualify for Turin, and the Race to Turin closes after the final week of the season. Vienna and Basel carry 500 points to their champions, and Paris 1,000. It is the last Masters event before the field is settled. In 2025 Auger-Aliassime, seeded ninth, reached the Paris final.
The same stretch decides the year-end No. 1. Sinner went into the 2025 Paris final knowing that a title would return him to the top of the rankings ahead of Carlos Alcaraz.
