Alexander Zverev’s US Open title did not make him world No. 1, and it did not close the gap in the rankings to anything like striking distance. What it did was flip the other table. Zverev now leads the PIF ATP Race to Turin on 8,650 points, 700 clear of Jannik Sinner, and the two of them are the only players so far assured of a place at the Nitto ATP Finals.
The Race is where the season finale is decided, and it is not the same list as the rankings. The rankings run on a rolling 52-week window, so they count points earned last autumn alongside points earned last week. The Race counts 2026 only. Every player started January on zero and the table closes after the Paris Masters in early November, which is why the indoor swing decides so many of the final places.

How the eight places are filled. Under the ATP rulebook, the top seven in the Race after the Paris Masters go through automatically. Then up to two players who won a Grand Slam in 2026 and finished the year ranked between eighth and 20th take places ahead of the queue. The eighth and final place goes to the next player in line after that. In practice the Slam-winner clause looks unlikely to bite this year: the three men who won majors in 2026 — Zverev at Roland Garros and the US Open, Alcaraz in Melbourne and Sinner at Wimbledon — currently sit first, second and fourth in the Race. Two alternates are named alongside the eight.
Why the year-end No. 1 is now a live question. Sinner leads the rankings on 11,500 to Zverev’s 9,690, a gap of 1,810 points, and begins his 89th week at the top. But the two men are carrying very different loads into the autumn. Zverev drops 1,080 ranking points over the rest of the season. Sinner drops 3,550. If Zverev plays the indoor swing well and Sinner does not, the rankings converge on the Race rather than the other way round.
The oddity of it is that Zverev has spent 2026 beating almost nobody from the top of the game. He is 0-5 against Sinner this year and lost his only meeting with Alcaraz, and until the US Open final he had one win against a top-10 opponent all season. What he has done instead is be available. Sinner missed the US Open with a knee injury. Alcaraz missed two majors and came into New York having not played a tournament in more than four months. Zverev went 25-2 in Grand Slam matches, more than anyone else this year.
The six seats still open. Shelton, third, made his Turin debut last year. Alcaraz, fourth, is the reigning Australian Open champion but has the thinnest playing schedule of anyone near the cut and the largest uncertainty attached to it. Below them sit four men chasing a first appearance at the season finale: Cobolli, Tiafoe, Fils and, from ninth, Jodar. Tiafoe, at 28, would be the oldest first-timer of the group.
Medvedev holds the eighth and final provisional place, and he is the most exposed man in the table — he has significant autumn points to defend and a narrow cushion over the chasing pack. Fritz and Paul are both close enough that a good October changes the picture.
The event. The Nitto ATP Finals run from 15 to 22 November at the Inalpi Arena in Turin, on indoor hard. Eight players, two round-robin groups of four, semifinals and a final.
