For the second year running, Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic will meet in the Wimbledon semifinals, first on Centre Court on Friday. The subplot is six months old. In January, Djokovic beat Sinner in five sets in the Australian Open semifinals, ending a five-match losing streak to the Italian and handing him one of the few genuine setbacks of an otherwise dominant season.
That result is why Friday reads differently from last year, when Sinner won their semifinal in straight sets on the way to his first Wimbledon title. Sinner still leads the head-to-head 6-5; a Djokovic win would level it at 6-6.
Why Melbourne may not transfer. The circumstances have changed. Djokovic’s win came on a hard court at the season’s opening major, when he was fresh from a long off-season. On Friday he turns 39, two days after the longest quarterfinal in Wimbledon history — a five-hour, 15-minute win over Félix Auger-Aliassime that reached a final-set tiebreak. Sinner, by contrast, beat Jan-Lennard Struff in straight sets and spent more than two and a half fewer hours on court in the last eight.
The grass equation. Grass rewards the first strike and shortens rallies, which suits Sinner’s flat, early-timed ball and forgives less of the extended baseline exchanges in which Djokovic can still, as he showed against Auger-Aliassime, lock down. The defending champion is on a 12-match Wimbledon winning streak and has not faced a top-10 seed all fortnight; No. 8 Daniil Medvedev, the highest seed in his section, lost in the third round.
Context for both. Neither man reached the fourth round at Roland Garros — Sinner exited in the second round, Djokovic in the third — making this an unlikely stage for their reunion. Sinner is chasing his first Grand Slam final of the season; Djokovic is pursuing a record-extending 25th major. The winner meets either Alexander Zverev or British wild card Arthur Fery in Sunday’s final.
Djokovic, asked about the contrast with January, pointed to the change in conditions and timing. “It’s a bit different now,” he said.
