The Laver Cup has been played eight times since its first edition in Prague in 2017. Team Europe has won five of them and Team World three, including the last one, in San Francisco in 2025. How a team wins. Each of the three days has three singles matches and one doubles match. A win is worth one point on Friday, two on Saturday and three on Sunday. There are 24 points available, and the first team to 13 takes the trophy. Because Sunday matches are worth three, a winning total can finish above 13. The match that decided each edition
2017, Prague. Roger Federer beat Nick Kyrgios 4-6, 7-6(6), 11-9 in the last match of the weekend, taking the match tiebreak to seal the first title for Europe.
2018, Chicago. Alexander Zverev came from a set down to beat Kevin Anderson 6-7(3), 7-5, 10-7 and take Europe to 13.
2019, Geneva. The closest finish of the European run. Zverev again supplied the winning point, beating Milos Raonic in a match tiebreak for a 13-11 result in front of a home crowd for Federer.
2021, Boston. After a year off, Europe won the most one-sided edition to date. Andrey Rublev and Zverev closed it in Sunday’s opening doubles, beating Reilly Opelka and Denis Shapovalov 6-2, 6-7(4), 10-3.
2022, London. Federer’s farewell weekend. Team World trailed 8-4 going into Sunday, then won three straight. Frances Tiafoe saved four match points in the second-set tiebreak against Stefanos Tsitsipas and won 1-6, 7-6(11), 10-8. The match ended with a Tsitsipas forehand in the net and Tiafoe on his back on the black court.
2023, Vancouver. Team World led 10-2 after two days and needed one Sunday win. Ben Shelton and Tiafoe provided it in doubles, beating Hubert Hurkacz and Rublev 7-6(4), 7-6(5).
2024, Berlin. Team World led 8-4 after Saturday. Europe came back, and it went to the last match. Carlos Alcaraz broke Taylor Fritz in the 11th game of the second set and served out a 6-2, 7-5 win for a 13-11 result.
2025, San Francisco. Team World went into Sunday leading 9-3. Alcaraz kept Europe alive with a singles win over Francisco Cerúndolo, but Fritz won the 12th match to give Team World its third title.
Where the series stands
Europe leads 5-3. Europe won the first four editions. Team World won in 2022 and 2023, and the two sides have traded the trophy since. Team World arrives in London as the defending champion. The event returns to The O2 for the first time since 2022. The 10th edition moves to the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles in 2027.
The Laver Cup does not carry ranking points. It sits in the calendar between the US Open and the Asian swing, where the points for the Race to Turin are still being played for.
