Rafael Jodar played his first match as a top-10 player on Monday and beat Alejandro Tabilo 6-2, 6-3 in one hour and 16 minutes, second on Court Central at the Rolex Paris Masters. It was their fifth meeting of the year, a week after Jodar beat him 6-4, 6-2 in the first round in Basel.
The 20-year-old Spaniard came into Paris inside the last qualifying place for the Nitto ATP Finals, not one point outside it. The official PIF ATP Live Race to Turin published on Monday, after Basel and Vienna, has Jodar ninth on 3,194 points and Alex de Minaur 10th on 3,170. With Jannik Sinner out for the rest of the season, ninth is the last place in.
That reverses the order of the live figures used through the weekend, including in our report on de Minaur’s run to the Vienna final, which had the Australian one point ahead. The official table released on Monday puts Jodar 24 points clear, and it is the table the Turin field is drawn from.
The win means Jodar leaves Paris with at least the second-round points. De Minaur, seeded eighth, had a first-round bye and has yet to play.
Where it stands. Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz, Ben Shelton and Daniil Medvedev have qualified, and four places are open. Flavio Cobolli is sixth on 3,690, Arthur Fils seventh on 3,535 and Frances Tiafoe eighth on 3,390. Fils, 341 points inside the cutoff, retired from his Basel quarterfinal against Taylor Fritz with a back injury and said on Sunday that he is fit to play. Novak Djokovic is 11th. The Race ends with Paris, after a week of withdrawals that took Sinner, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Jakub Mensik out of the draw.
What Paris is worth. The official draw lists 10 points for a first-round defeat, 50 for the second round, 100 for the third round, 200 for a quarterfinal, 400 for a semifinal, 650 for the runner-up and 1,000 for the champion. Every contender below the four qualified men can still move by a few hundred points this week.
Opposite halves. De Minaur is in Zverev’s half and Jodar is in Alcaraz’s, so they can meet only in the final. Read across the draw and each has another contender in his section. De Minaur opens against Andrey Rublev or Tomas Martin Etcheverry, and Djokovic, who plays Basel champion Valentin Vacherot and then Luciano Darderi or qualifier Rinky Hijikata, could be his third-round opponent. Jodar plays Casper Ruud or qualifier Juan Manuel Cerundolo in the second round, with Cobolli possible in the third. Cobolli opens against Jan-Lennard Struff or wild card Arthur Gea.
Two more meetings in the third round. Tiafoe opens against Quentin Halys or Arthur Fery and could then meet Tommy Paul, who starts against Holger Rune. Fils plays wild card Kyrian Jacquet or qualifier Tomas Machac and is in the same section as Fritz, who opens against qualifier Benjamin Bonzi. A Fils-Fritz match would be a rematch of the Basel quarterfinal Fils could not finish.
What’s next. The Paris final is on Sunday, 8 November, and the ATP Finals are played at the Inalpi Arena in Turin from 15 to 22 November. Dates, points and past champions are in our Rolex Paris Masters guide, and the Turin format and field are in our ATP Finals guide. How the field is completed if a qualifier cannot play is in ATP Finals alternates explained.
