Jiri Lehecka reached the 2026 Miami Open final without having his serve broken. Five matches in, Jannik Sinner was the first player to do it, and Sinner won 6-4, 6-4. It was the biggest final of the Czech’s career, and it summed up where he stands: good enough to get to the last day of a Masters 1000, not yet able to win it against the best player in the draw.
Early career and the Rotterdam breakthrough
Lehecka was born on 8 November 2001 in Mlada Boleslav and turned professional in 2020. In 2021 he won two ATP Challenger singles titles. His first tour-level main-draw match came in Rotterdam in February 2022, where he came through qualifying and beat fifth seed Denis Shapovalov, then went all the way to the semifinals before losing to Stefanos Tsitsipas. The run lifted him into the top 100 for the first time.
He finished that season at the Next Gen ATP Finals in Milan, where he reached the final and lost to Brandon Nakashima.
Melbourne 2023 and the climb
The 2023 Australian Open was the first real step. Lehecka beat 11th seed Cameron Norrie, then sixth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime in the fourth round, the first top-10 win of his career, to reach a major quarterfinal. He lost there to Tsitsipas. A month later in Doha he beat top seed Andrey Rublev for his first win over a top-five player.
His first ATP title came in Adelaide in January 2024, where he beat Jack Draper in the final. His second followed a year later in Brisbane, when Reilly Opelka retired in the final. Between them came the result most people still attach to his name: in Madrid in 2024 he beat Rafael Nadal in the round of 16, then Daniil Medvedev in the quarterfinals to reach his first Masters 1000 semifinal. A back injury forced him to retire early in that semifinal.
2025 brought his best Grand Slam run since Melbourne. At the US Open he reached the quarterfinals, where he lost to Carlos Alcaraz, and the result took him into the top 20. He also lost a grass-court final to Alcaraz that summer, at Queen’s.
The 2026 Miami run
Seeded 21st in Miami, Lehecka beat Taylor Fritz and then Arthur Fils, 6-2, 6-2, in the semifinals. He came into the final having lost all three of his previous matches against Sinner.
The final was delayed by rain before it started and again during the second set. Sinner broke him early in the first set, the first time his serve had fallen all tournament, according to Olympics.com’s report. Lehecka then had break points of his own and could not convert them. Sinner completed the Indian Wells–Miami double without dropping a set. Two months later Lehecka reached his career-high ranking of No. 12.
Playing style
Lehecka is a right-hander with a two-handed backhand, listed at 1.85m. His results are spread across surfaces: both titles on outdoor hard courts, a Masters semifinal and the Nadal win on clay, and a final at Queen’s on grass. Miami is the clearest evidence of what his service game can do over a full event, and the Sinner final is the clearest evidence of what it cannot yet do against an elite returner.
