Brandon Nakashima spent most of his twenties as the American who was always supposed to be next and never quite arrived. In August 2026, at 25, he arrived. A run to the National Bank Open final in Montreal was followed a week later by a semifinal in Cincinnati, and a player who had never previously reached a tour-level final above ATP 250 level suddenly had back-to-back deep runs at the two biggest hard-court events before the US Open.
He was born in San Diego on Aug. 3, 2001, and still lives there. He stands 6 feet 2 inches, plays right-handed with a two-handed backhand, and turned professional in 2019 after a period at the University of Virginia. The junior credentials were real: two ITF boys’ singles titles in 2018 and the ITF Junior Masters, the year-end event for the top-ranked juniors. In 2022 he won the Next Gen ATP Finals, the under-21 showcase that has become a reasonable predictor of who lasts.
The tour-level record was slower to follow. His first ATP singles title came at the 2022 San Diego Open, in front of a home crowd, and for a long stretch it remained his only one. He added a doubles title at Delray Beach in 2025 alongside Miomir Kecmanovic. In January 2026 he reached the Brisbane International final and lost to Daniil Medvedev 6-2, 7-6 (1), the fourth tour-level final of a career that had produced one trophy.
Montreal changed the shape of it. Seeded 28th, he reached his first Masters 1000 semifinal, then beat the 19-year-old Spaniard Rafael Jodar 7-6 (3), 6-4 to make the final, striking 28 winners, winning 81 percent of his first-serve points and saving four break points serving it out. It was his fifth top-20 win of the season and his first final above ATP 250 level. The ranking followed: he had entered the North American swing outside the top 30 and left Canada at a career high.
Cincinnati confirmed it was not a single hot fortnight. Players who go deep at one Masters 1000 frequently flatten out at the next; Nakashima did the opposite. He beat Medvedev in the third round and then Taylor Fritz 7-6 (9), 4-6, 6-3 in an all-American quarterfinal in which Fritz served superbly and Nakashima simply refused to go away, saving a set point before converting his fifth chance in the opening tie-break. That win lifted him to a tour-leading 22 hard-court victories for the season and made him the first American man to reach the semifinals in Canada and Cincinnati in the same year since Mardy Fish in 2011.
The game is built on clean, early, flat ball-striking off both wings and a willingness to take the ball on the rise rather than retreat. He is not a big server by the standards of the American group around him, and he does not have Ben Shelton‘s left-handed leverage or Fritz’s raw forehand power. What he has is depth, timing and an unusually low error rate under pressure, which is why so many of his best wins arrive in tie-breaks and deciding sets. The 2026 improvement has been aggression: a player long accused of being too passive from the baseline has started to hit through the court.
Grand Slam results have lagged the rest of the résumé. His best runs are a fourth round at Wimbledon in 2022 and a fourth round at the US Open in 2024, and he has lost in the first round in Melbourne on four occasions. He played Davis Cup for the United States, reaching the quarterfinals in 2024. Against Frances Tiafoe, his most frequent American opponent, he trails 1-6, their only 2026 meeting coming in the Acapulco semifinals, which Tiafoe won in three sets.
He arrived at the 2026 US Open seeded 16th, in a men’s draw missing Jannik Sinner, with a 12-3 record from the summer swing. It did not carry over. Fellow Californian Alex Michelsen, whom he had never played on tour, beat him 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 in the second round, AFP reported, controlling points with his serve and forehand. Michelsen went on to the quarterfinals. Three weeks later Nakashima played for Team World at the Laver Cup in London and beat Jakub Menšík in the opening-day singles, according to the ATP Tour. Converting hard-court form into a first deep run at a major remains the open question of his career.
