Jelena Ostapenko and Marcelo Arévalo rallied from a set and a break down to win the Wimbledon mixed doubles title on Thursday, a victory that completed a rare career sweep for the Latvian and delivered the first trophy of the 2026 Championships.
The comeback. The second seeds trailed Australia’s Storm Hunter and Marc Polmans by a set and 3-1 before turning the final on Centre Court, closing out a 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 win in one hour and 56 minutes. The pair broke twice to level the match, then took control of the decider after the Centre Court roof was closed, sealing the last set inside half an hour.
A complete collection. The title gave Ostapenko Grand Slam trophies across all three disciplines. She won the 2017 Roland Garros singles title, the 2024 US Open women’s doubles crown alongside Lyudmyla Kichenok, and now a mixed doubles major. The achievement also spans all three surfaces — the Paris clay, the New York hard courts and, at last, the London grass. By one count she became the seventh woman in six decades to win majors in all three disciplines, joining a group that includes Serena and Venus Williams and Barbora Krejčíková; a separate tally placed her among the handful of active players to have done so.
“Now I am Grand Slam champion in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles,” Ostapenko said.
Long overdue at SW19. The win resolved a personal gap at the tournament Ostapenko has long called her favorite. She had reached two Wimbledon finals without winning — the mixed doubles final in 2019 with Robert Lindstedt and last year’s women’s doubles final — and left both times as runner-up. Her only previous Wimbledon title had come as a junior, when she won the girls’ singles in 2014. She also reached the Wimbledon singles semifinals in 2018, the deepest run by a Latvian woman at the All England Club.
Arévalo’s own milestone. For Arévalo, the title carried separate history. The Salvadoran became the first player from El Salvador to win a Wimbledon title, and the crown was his third at Grand Slam level after men’s doubles victories at Roland Garros in 2022 and 2024. He remained in contention in the men’s doubles draw, keeping alive the prospect of a second title at these Championships. Ostapenko credited the partnership’s contrasting styles, her power from the baseline paired with his work at the net.
The mixed doubles final traditionally opens the closing weekend at Wimbledon, and Thursday’s result set the tone before the singles semifinals and finals. For Ostapenko, nearing 30 and increasingly productive in doubles without stepping back from singles, it marked the completion of a collection few players ever assemble — and the closing of a chapter at the one major that had eluded her.
