The dust has settled on Roland Garros, and the new ATP rankings tell the story of a fortnight that reshaped the top of the men’s game without dislodging its summit. Jannik Sinner remains world No. 1 despite a shock second-round exit in Paris, his lead built up to comfortably over 3,000 points. Below him, the picture is far more volatile.
Zverev’s breakthrough. Alexander Zverev finally has his Grand Slam. The German’s five-set win over Flavio Cobolli in Sunday’s final ended a long and often painful wait, and it leaves him at No. 3 with real momentum. More significant than the ranking number is the gap above him: Zverev now sits around 2,500 points behind world No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz — and the next few weeks are tilted heavily in his favour.
Alcaraz exposed. Alcaraz did not play Roland Garros, withdrawing as defending champion with a wrist injury and shedding the 2,000 points that title had been worth. That same injury now rules him out of the entire grass season, leaving roughly 1,800 points — from last year’s Queen’s title run and Wimbledon final — unprotected and falling off his total. Zverev, by contrast, has only a sliver to defend on grass after an early Wimbledon exit a year ago. The arithmetic is straightforward: if Zverev produces even a moderate grass swing, the No. 2 ranking is within reach.
Movers behind them. The Paris fortnight rewarded several others. Felix Auger-Aliassime climbed to a career-high No. 4, overtaking Novak Djokovic, who slipped to No. 7 after a third-round loss. Cobolli’s run to the final lifted him into the top 10 for the first time, at No. 10. Among the younger names, Jakub Mensik jumped to No. 17 on the back of his semi-final, while Rafael Jódar (No. 23) and Joao Fonseca (No. 25) both reached new career highs.
On to the grass. The reshuffle frames a grass swing that began this week with the season’s top names scattered and, in several cases, idle. Auger-Aliassime, Alex de Minaur and Daniil Medvedev all opened their ‘s-Hertogenbosch campaigns with first-round byes, with their first matches due Tuesday; Stuttgart, meanwhile, lost Zverev, Cobolli and Mensik to post-Paris withdrawals. With Sinner skipping the warm-up events and Alcaraz absent entirely, the road to Wimbledon offers the chasing pack a rare opening — and Zverev the clearest incentive of all.
