Sinner Cleared After Health Scare but Skips Grass Warm-Ups

Off-court, player fitness. Jannik Sinner has been given encouraging news after the health scare that overshadowed the end of his clay-court season, with the world No.1 set to forgo the grass-court warm-up events and head straight into his Wimbledon title defense.

The defending champion’s spring ended in alarming fashion at Roland Garros, where he collapsed physically during a shock second-round exit to Argentina’s Juan Manuel Cerúndolo on 28 May. Two sets up and leading 5-1 in the third, Sinner was overcome by dizziness, nausea and cramping in extreme heat and won just a handful of games thereafter — one of the most startling Grand Slam defeats in recent memory, and his earliest Slam exit in years.

The tests. In the days that followed, Sinner underwent checks at the J Medical facility in Turin before his team sought a second opinion at the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan, where, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport and Corriere della Sera, he spent around four hours undergoing a battery of examinations including a stress electrocardiogram, a Holter monitor and a cardiac MRI, returning the next day for further specialist consultations.

The outcome. The results, received on 10 June, were officially kept confidential, but Italian outlets reported that no worrying signs emerged and that the Paris episode was attributed to accumulated fatigue from an exceptionally heavy match load over the spring, compounded by the conditions in the French capital, rather than any underlying cardiac problem. Doctors are reported to have cleared him to resume training.

What it means. Sinner has opted to skip the grass-court tune-ups, including the Halle event he won in 2024, choosing rest and private grass preparation over competitive match practice. It leaves him without a grass match before Wimbledon begins on 29 June, where he will nonetheless start as a heavy favorite to retain the title. For a player whose physical durability has occasionally been questioned at the sport’s most demanding moments, the reassurance from Milan matters as much as any result this month.
