Marie Bouzkova won a US Open trophy at 16. It has taken her most of the twelve years since to become the player that result implied she already was. The Czech reached a career-high world No. 21 in July 2026, aged 27, off the back of a grass-court title and a fourth-round run at Wimbledon — a rise so gradual that it happened without anyone declaring her a breakthrough.
Prague, Bradenton, and the 2014 Junior Title
Bouzkova was born in Prague on 21 July 1998 and moved to Florida at ten to train at the Bollettieri academy, spending two years there before continuing her development with her father and coach Cristian Requeni. She still lists Bradenton as her residence.
The junior career peaked at Flushing Meadows in 2014, where she won the girls’ singles title, beating Anhelina Kalinina 6-4, 7-6(5) in the final. She did not defend it. What followed was not the fast track that a junior major usually implies but five years of ITF-level accumulation — she collected a dozen titles at that level between 2014 and 2019 before winning her first Grand Slam main-draw match at Wimbledon in 2019 and breaking into the top 100.
The Game
At 5ft 11in, Bouzkova is tall enough to be expected to hit through the court and does not. She is right-handed with a two-handed backhand, and her value is in coverage and placement rather than pace — she absorbs power, changes direction early, and makes opponents produce one more ball than they want to. Against the heavier hitters on tour, the pattern is consistent: she extends rallies past the point where the aggressor’s margin holds.
That style explains both the ceiling and the durability. She has finished inside the top 50 in each of the last several seasons without ever threatening the very top, and she has been a genuinely awkward draw for seeds throughout. It also explains the doubles record: seven WTA doubles titles, a career-high doubles ranking of No. 15 in May 2024, and a Wimbledon doubles semifinal in 2023.
Wimbledon 2022, and Four Singles Titles
2022 was the first year the results arrived together. Bouzkova won her maiden WTA title in Prague, beating Anastasia Potapova 6-0, 6-3 in the final, and reached her first Grand Slam quarterfinal at Wimbledon, where Ons Jabeur stopped her. She had started that season only just inside the top 100 and finished it at No. 25.
The second title came at the same tournament three years later, over Linda Noskova in the 2025 Prague final, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3. In 2026 she added two more: Bogota in March, over Panna Udvardy after dropping the opening set, and Nottingham on grass in June. She strengthened her team at the end of 2025 by hiring Marc Lopez, the former Spanish doubles specialist and Olympic gold medallist, and the titles followed quickly enough that the connection is hard to ignore.

Back at Flushing Meadows
The US Open has never given her much in the senior draw. Her best run is the third round in 2023, and she arrived in 2026 seeded 25th. She opened with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Elsa Jacquemot and reached the third round, where the draw handed her Iga Swiatek, the No. 8 seed, on Saturday 5 September. Swiatek won 7-6, 7-6, and the third round remains Bouzkova’s ceiling in New York.
It is the matchup her game is least suited to and most interesting in. Swiatek’s forehand is built to punish exactly the kind of ball Bouzkova hits when she is defending, and Bouzkova’s counter is to take the ball earlier and shorten the court — the thing she does not naturally do. She got closer than the head-to-head suggested she would. Their three previous meetings had all gone to Swiatek in straight sets, the most recent a 6-2, 6-3 win at the Australian Open in January. This one went to tiebreaks in both sets and still ended the same way, which is the honest summary of where her game sits against the top of the tour.
