Alexandra Eala Stuns Swiatek to Make Filipino History

Alexandra Eala became the first Filipino player to reach the second week of a Grand Slam, upsetting defending champion Iga Swiatek 7-6(9), 6-2 in the Wimbledon third round on Centre Court on Saturday.

The 29th seed saved two set points in a tense opening tiebreak, taking it 11-9, then pulled away in the second set as Swiatek’s title defense unraveled. The win, the biggest of Eala’s career, sent the No. 3 seed out of the tournament and moved Eala into a fourth-round meeting with Jasmine Paolini on Monday.

A first for Philippine tennis. No player from the Philippines, man or woman, had reached the fourth round of a major in the Open era before Saturday. Eala, 21, had already broken new ground this fortnight, becoming the first Filipino to win a main-draw match at Wimbledon with a first-round defeat of Renata Zarazua, and the first to reach a Slam third round when she came from a set down to beat Maya Joint. The run has turned her matches into national events, with large Filipino crowds following her across the grounds.

A breakthrough years in the making. The result reframes a Grand Slam record that had lagged behind Eala’s tour-level form. She had won just one match across her previous five major appearances, a gap between promise and production that defined the early part of her career. A graduate of the Rafael Nadal Academy in Mallorca, she arrived at the All England Club in strong grass form after a semifinal in Berlin and a WTA 125 title in Birmingham. Her left-handed game, built on a low, skidding slice, is well suited to the surface.

Swiatek’s grip slips. For Swiatek, the defeat continued a difficult season and cost her the title she won a year ago. She held set points at 6-5 and 8-7 in the opening tiebreak but converted neither, then was broken repeatedly in the second set. The loss is projected to drop the six-time major champion out of the top five when the rankings update, according to Tennis Majors.

A rivalry that keeps growing. It was Eala’s second career win over Swiatek. The first came as a 19-year-old at the 2025 Miami Open, where Eala reached the semifinals as a qualifier. Swiatek won their following meeting, in Madrid, but Saturday moved Eala ahead 2-1 in the head-to-head and marked her third straight win at Wimbledon.

What comes next. Eala faces Paolini, the 2024 Wimbledon runner-up and Olympic doubles gold medalist, for a place in the quarterfinals. The pair have not met on grass. Whatever follows, Eala’s run has already pushed Philippine tennis onto a stage it has rarely occupied, and given a country with little tennis history a genuine contender in the second week of a major.
