Mirra Andreeva launched her clay-court season in commanding fashion, rallying from a lopsided opening set to defeat Anastasia Potapova 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 in Sunday’s final of the Upper Austria Ladies Linz and claim her fifth career WTA title.
The 18-year-old Russian, seeded first and ranked No. 10 in the world, barely resembled a top-ten player in the early going. After dropping her opening service game, Andreeva was overwhelmed by a rampant Potapova who broke twice more, raced through the set in 29 minutes and appeared to be heading for a comfortable afternoon inside the Design Center Linz.
At one stage Andreeva had won none of her second-serve points and her forehand was leaking unforced errors at a damaging rate.The second set brought an immediate change of fortune. Andreeva broke Potapova’s serve in the opening game and, although she was pegged back once herself to level at 3-3, she broke again to take control and served out the set to level the match.
The third set followed a similar pattern of traded breaks before Andreeva edged clear at 4-3 and, peppering Potapova’s backhand with cross-court forehands, held her nerve to close out the title.
It is Andreeva’s second title of the season, following her January triumph in Adelaide, and the win keeps her unbeaten through four matches in Linz this week.
For Potapova, who turns 26 this month, the final represented a homecoming of sorts. Born in Russia and a three-time WTA champion representing her home country — including a Linz title in 2023 — she switched federation in December and competed throughout this week under the Austrian flag.
Her run to Sunday’s final made her the first player representing Austria to reach the Linz final since the tournament joined the WTA Tour calendar in 1991. The crowd inside the Design Center gave her thunderous support, and she came close to forcing another break in the third set before ultimately giving way to Andreeva’s power from the baseline.
The tournament itself made history this week as well. The Upper Austria Ladies Linz, a WTA 500 event, was held on indoor clay for the first time after more than three decades as a hard-court fixture since its founding in 1991.
Andreeva will now carry the momentum of a title — and a first extended run on the surface — into next week’s WTA 500 event in Stuttgart as the European clay swing builds toward Roland Garros.
