Max Purcell is free to play again. The 18-month anti-doping suspension that has kept the Australian out of professional tennis expired on 11 June 2026, clearing one of the doubles game’s most accomplished players to resume his career.
Purcell, 27, is a two-time Grand Slam doubles champion, having won the 2022 Wimbledon title alongside Matthew Ebden and the 2024 US Open crown with Jordan Thompson. His case, resolved by the International Tennis Integrity Agency, was unusual: it did not involve a positive test for a banned substance. Instead, Purcell admitted to a breach involving a “prohibited method” — receiving intravenous vitamin infusions that exceeded the permitted limit of 100 millilitres in a 12-hour window, having taken more than 500 millilitres on two occasions in December 2023.
An unusual case — the player entered a voluntary provisional suspension in December 2024 after identifying the issue in his own medical records, and his cooperation with the investigation earned a 25 per cent reduction from a possible 24-month sanction. He also forfeited results and prize money from the period covering his first violation. At the time of the ruling, ITIA chief executive Karen Moorhouse noted that the case demonstrated the anti-doping rules reach beyond positive tests alone, covering the manner in which even permitted substances are administered.
Purcell did not hide how heavily the process weighed on him, describing months of disrupted sleep and anxiety while the case dragged on and expressing relief when it concluded. The suspension cost him a long stretch of his prime years on tour, including major doubles opportunities.
His path back will not be instant. A returning player must rebuild a ranking or rely on protected-ranking and wild-card routes to gain entry into events, and Purcell has not yet confirmed where he will make his first appearance. But with the grass season underway and the back half of the calendar still to come, the door is now open. For a player whose résumé already includes two of the sport’s biggest doubles titles, the coming months will be about proving he can climb back to that level.
