Ferrer Will Leave Spain’s Davis Cup Captaincy a Year Early, After One More Run at Bologna

David Ferrer will step down as Spain’s Davis Cup captain at the end of 2026, giving up the final year of his contract, the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation (RFET) said on Thursday. His last ties in charge will come at the Final 8 in Bologna next month, where Spain open against Austria.

Ferrer, 44, told the federation that his reasons were “únicamente personales” — purely personal — and that he wanted to begin a new professional stage. In a statement on social media he said this would be his last year as captain and that he was renouncing 2027. He thanked the RFET for the chance to captain his country, and the players and staff who had worked with him, and said he was motivated to guide the team to another Davis Cup title.

“El día 31 de diciembre de 2026 acaba la aventura de David Ferrer como capitán,” RFET president Miguel Díaz said, marking 31 December as the end of Ferrer’s time in the role. Díaz said the federation respected the decision, called Ferrer a legend as a player, credited him with giving debuts to several young players and thanked him for the run to the 2025 final, in which Spain finished runners-up.

Bologna. The Final 8 runs from 24 to 29 November, with every tie played as two singles followed by a doubles. Spain play Austria in the fourth quarterfinal on Thursday, 26 November, after Great Britain against Germany. The winner of that pair meets the Great Britain-Germany winner in the semifinals on Saturday, 28 November, and the final is on Sunday, 29 November. In the top half, the Czech Republic play Canada on 24 November and hosts Italy play Korea on 25 November. GTN covered how the eight teams qualified for Bologna in September.

What it means. Ferrer’s announcement leaves the RFET to choose a new captain for 2027. The federation did not name a successor or set out a timetable in its statement.
