Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka will meet in the Miami Open women’s final on Saturday after both advanced through contrasting but equally commanding semifinal performances on Thursday.
On the men’s side, Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev booked their spots in Friday’s semifinal with straight-set wins that underlined their status as the clear favorites for the title.
Gauff Dismantles Muchova
Gauff was in devastating form as she swept past Karolina Muchova 6-1, 6-1 in less than an hour to reach her first Miami Open final. The fourth-seeded American dropped just two games across the entire match, extending her perfect career record against Muchova to 6-0 in the process.
Muchova briefly threatened with an early break in the opening set, but Gauff quickly reasserted control and never looked back. Her returning was relentless, her serve reliable, and her movement sharp throughout — the kind of performance that leaves little room for analysis beyond the numbers themselves.
The win was Gauff’s most emphatic of the tournament and sets up a final appearance on the biggest stage of her Miami career to date.
Sabalenka Stays On Course for Sunshine Double
World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka reached the final with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Elena Rybakina in a match that was more controlled than the score alone suggests. Sabalenka absorbed Rybakina’s early pressure in the opening set before pulling away cleanly, then opened the second with a dominant 4-0 run that effectively ended the contest.
The win took 1 hour and 19 minutes and sends Sabalenka into a second consecutive Miami Open final. Having already claimed the Indian Wells title earlier this month, she now has the opportunity to complete the Sunshine Double — winning both the BNP Paribas Open and the Miami Open in the same year — one of the most coveted back-to-back achievements in the sport.
The Final: A Rivalry Renewed
Saturday’s women’s final brings together two players who have been defining the top of the WTA for the past two years. Gauff and Sabalenka arrive with their head-to-head tied at 6-6, and their recent meetings have consistently produced high-quality tennis. Gauff has beaten Sabalenka in a Grand Slam final setting before, while Sabalenka took their most recent encounter at the WTA Finals.
For Gauff, Saturday represents a chance to win her first Miami title on home soil. For Sabalenka, it is an opportunity to cement what is already shaping up as one of the standout seasons of her career.
Sinner and Zverev Dominate the Men’s Quarterfinals
The men’s draw produced two equally one-sided results on Thursday. Sinner, the second seed from Italy, was ruthless against American wild card Frances Tiafoe, winning 6-2, 6-2 in just over an hour. The world No. 2 was precise and efficient throughout, giving Tiafoe little opportunity to settle.
Zverev, the third seed from Germany, was similarly dominant against 18th-seeded Francisco Cerundolo of Argentina, winning 6-1, 6-2. Cerundolo had been one of the stories of the tournament with an impressive run through the draw, but he found no answers against a Zverev operating at a high level. His exit marked the end of the deepest Latin American singles campaign of this year’s event.
The two Europeans will now face each other in Friday’s semifinal in what promises to be one of the matches of the tournament.
Doubles Roundup
In men’s doubles, top seeds Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos advanced to the semifinals with a 6-3, 7-6(3) win over Hugo Nys and Edouard Roger-Vasselin. Fourth seeds Harri Heliovaara and Henry Patten also progressed, beating Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic 6-3, 6-4. Arevalo, the former doubles world No. 1, exits at the quarterfinal stage.
Looking Ahead
The Miami Open continues Friday with the men’s singles semifinals and the remaining doubles action, before the women’s final on Saturday and the men’s final on Sunday, March 29. With Gauff versus Sabalenka headlining the weekend, the tournament’s final stretch has the makings of a fitting conclusion to one of the strongest fields of the spring season.
