Chwalinska becomes first qualifier to reach French Open final

The 2026 French Open women’s final will feature a player who arrived in Paris through qualifying. Maja Chwalinska, the world No. 114 from Poland, beat Russia’s Diana Shnaider 7-6 (4), 6-4 on Court Philippe-Chatrier on Thursday to complete one of the most improbable runs in Grand Slam history and reach her first major final.

Chwalinska becomes the first player to reach the Roland Garros final after coming through the qualifying rounds. The only comparable feat at any Grand Slam belongs to Emma Raducanu, who won the 2021 US Open as a qualifier; playing only her third career major, Chwalinska is now the second-fastest player to a Slam final behind the Briton.

A tight first set — The semifinal was even from the outset, the two first-time semifinalists trading break points early before settling into a tense exchange of holds. Chwalinska edged ahead at 6-5 after a long game in which she fought off two break points, but Shnaider held to force a tiebreak. There the qualifier took control, breaking the Shnaider serve repeatedly to close out the set 7-4.

Shnaider fades — Both players again exchanged break points to open the second set before holding firm. Shnaider, who had moved 4-3 ahead, called a medical timeout and was examined for a back problem by a trainer before continuing. Chwalinska seized the moment, leveling quickly and then breaking for a 5-4 lead before serving out the match to reach Saturday’s final.

Shnaider’s run ends — For Shnaider, the 25th seed, the defeat ended a fortnight that had already produced the result of the tournament. The 22-year-old Russian had stunned world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the quarterfinals, recovering from a set and a break down to win 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 while reeling off the last 10 games, and she had earlier beaten Madison Keys on her run. A maiden Grand Slam final proved a step too far.

A qualifier’s fairytale — Chwalinska’s path through the draw has been remarkable in its own right. A year ago she was ranked outside the world’s top 130; she arrived at Roland Garros having to win through qualifying and has not stopped since, beating seeded players including Zheng Qinwen, Elise Mertens and Anna Kalinskaya along the way. The run has already earned her by far the largest payday of her career and is projected to lift her more than 100 places in the rankings, into the top 30.

Awaiting Andreeva — In Saturday’s final, Chwalinska will face eighth seed Mirra Andreeva, who reached her own first Grand Slam final earlier on Thursday with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk. The match guarantees a first-time Grand Slam champion, a fitting conclusion to a tournament blown wide open by early exits across the draw. Andreeva, the 19-year-old Russian, will start as the favorite on ranking and form, but Chwalinska has spent the past two weeks proving that little about this Roland Garros has gone to script.

For a player who began the tournament among the qualifiers, simply reaching the final is already history. On Saturday, she has the chance to add to it.
