Djokovic Withdraws from Miami Open with Right Shoulder Injury

Novak Djokovic has pulled out of the Miami Open with a right shoulder injury, tournament officials announced Sunday. Djokovic is a six-time winner of the Miami event and an eight-time finalist — both marks tied with Andre Agassi for all-time tournament men’s singles records.

The world No. 3, who finished runner-up at Miami in 2025, recently reached the fourth round at Indian Wells but lost a demanding three-set match to British star Jack Draper. By pulling out of this year’s tournament, he will drop the 650 ranking points he earned for that result and is expected to fall outside the world’s top three.

Djokovic won the tournament in 2007, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, and 2016, plus made another trip to the final in 2009. Last year, he reached the finals at Miami before losing 7–6 (4), 7–6 (4) to Jakub Menšík of the Czech Republic.

The 38-year-old had already shown signs of trouble heading into Miami. Despite reaching the fourth round at Indian Wells for the first time in nine years, Djokovic never looked entirely comfortable, dropping sets to Kamil Majchrzak and Aleksandar Kovacevic in his opening matches before falling to eventual 2025 champion Draper. Djokovic had already revealed he was managing an injury during the past fortnight at Indian Wells.

His absence removes one of the biggest names from the Miami field and opens up a section of the draw that many players will now see as a major opportunity. The decision appears to be a precaution ahead of the European clay court swing beginning next month in Monte Carlo.

Djokovic holds the record for most ATP Masters 1000 titles with 40 and has won 101 tour-level trophies overall, most recently triumphing last November in Athens. The 24-time Grand Slam champion played last week at Indian Wells and reached the fourth round in singles and the second round of doubles.

The Miami Open main draw begins Wednesday, with qualifying beginning Monday.
