Zverev and Medvedev Need Three Sets to Reach Madrid Third Round

Russia’s Daniil Medvedev defeated Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan 6-2, 6-7 (3/7), 6-4 on Saturday to reach the third round of the Madrid Masters 1000, needing three sets just as Germany’s Alexander Zverev had done earlier.

Medvedev, who has often said he does not feel comfortable on clay, needed two hours and 13 minutes to get past his opponent.

The Russian will face Norway’s Nicolai Budkov Kjaer in the next round after Kjaer beat Canada’s Denis Shapovalov in convincing fashion, 6-2, 6-1.

Earlier, Zverev defeated Argentina’s Mariano Navone 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 in his Madrid Masters 1000 debut.

The world No. 3, a two-time champion at the Caja Mágica in 2018 and 2021, needed one hour and 42 minutes to see off the Argentine.

Zverev was dominant in the first set, but Navone came out differently in the second. More composed, the Argentine broke the German’s serve in the third game and used that advantage to take the set.

Zverev got the message. In the third set, he rediscovered his best tennis against a Navone who struggled with the German’s serve and powerful groundstrokes.

The German will face France’s Térence Atmane in the next round after Atmane beat compatriot Ugo Humbert 7-6 (7/3), 7-6 (7/5).

Atmane overcame severe cramps that appeared to leave him struggling to control his legs, eventually winning a tense match.

Earlier, defending champion Casper Ruud gave Spain’s Jaume Munar no chance in his Madrid opener, winning 6-0, 6-1.

The Norwegian needed just one hour and five minutes to sweep past the Spaniard.

Ruud, who is defending the title he won in 2025, will face Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the third round. Davidovich defeated compatriot Pablo Carreño Busta 6-3, 6-3 earlier in the day.

Argentina’s Francisco Cerúndolo also advanced to the third round of the Madrid Masters 1000 after beating Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann 6-1, 7-5 in one hour and 40 minutes.

Cerúndolo will face Italy’s Luciano Darderi in the next round after Darderi gave his brother, Juan Manuel Cerúndolo, little chance.

Darderi beat the Argentine 6-1, 6-3 in his Caja Mágica debut.

Russia’s Karen Khachanov, ranked No. 16 in the world, also advanced after defeating Australia’s Adam Walton 6-2, 6-3 in the second round.

In the afternoon, Paraguay’s Daniel Vallejo reached the third round in Madrid with a 6-4, 6-3 win over American Learner Tien.

Vallejo, who came through qualifying, will face Italy’s Flavio Cobolli, the world No. 13, after Cobolli beat Argentina’s Camilo Ugo Carabelli 6-7 (7/9), 6-1, 6-4 in two hours and 27 minutes.
