Iga Swiatek’s search for a new coach following her split with Wim Fissette has ended, with French outlet L’Equipe confirming she has begun a trial with Francisco Roig at the Rafael Nadal Academy in Mallorca ahead of the clay-court season.
The four-time French Open champion will travel to Nadal’s academy in Manacor to train on clay and begin a trial with Roig. Roig was most recently seen on the WTA Tour coaching Emma Raducanu for six months before their partnership ended in January.
He then moved to the ATP Tour, working with the big-serving Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. Swiatek announced her split from Fissette following a shock first-round loss to world No. 50 Magda Linette in Miami, a defeat that ended her run of 73 consecutive opening-round wins on tour.
ESPN The six-time Grand Slam champion had failed to pass the quarter-finals in any of her four tournaments this year. Swiatek revealed the decision to part with Fissette was not made in Miami but was a longer process, saying she realized during the tournament in Doha that she did not feel as good on court as before.
Assuming the trial with Roig is successful, he will join her at the Stuttgart Open, which begins on April 13. Swiatek is a two-time champion in Stuttgart, though she lost in the quarter-finals there last year. She returns as the fourth seed in a field that includes the world’s top three — Aryna Sabalenka, Elena Rybakina and Coco Gauff.
