Sinner Beats Alcaraz to Win 2026 Monte-Carlo Masters Title

Jannik Sinner claimed his first clay-court Masters 1000 title Sunday, defeating Carlos Alcaraz 7-6(5), 6-3 in a wind-swept final at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters to reclaim the world No. 1 ranking and cement his status as the dominant force in men’s tennis.

The two-hour, 15-minute victory made Sinner just the second player — alongside Novak Djokovic in 2015 — to win the Miami and Monte-Carlo Masters back to back. It was also the latest trophy in a dominant run that has seen the 24-year-old Italian become virtually unstoppable at the top tier of the sport.

With the win, Sinner will return to No. 1 in the PIF ATP Rankings on Monday for the first time this year, beginning his 67th week as world No. 1 and moving one clear of Alcaraz, who has held top spot for 66 weeks.

The first set was tightly contested under difficult conditions, with the swirling Mediterranean wind making clean ball-striking a premium commodity. Alcaraz struggled to generate his usual damage on second serve, with the cooler conditions limiting the impact of his kick serve into Sinner’s backhand.

The Spaniard showed characteristic resilience, saving a crucial break point in the ninth game, but Sinner managed the elements with greater consistency as the set stretched into a tiebreak.

Sinner found his spots on serve and read the Alcaraz drop shot to seize control of the breaker, eventually clinching the set when Alcaraz hit a double fault.

Alcaraz came out swinging to open the second set. The Spaniard won one of the points of the week to break Sinner’s serve at the start of the second set, pushing from side to side before finding the feet of the oncoming Italian with a crosscourt backhand pass. But Sinner steadied and took command, breaking back and ultimately running out a comfortable 6-3 winner.

The Monte-Carlo title is Sinner’s first at the event and his eighth ATP Masters 1000 crown overall, drawing level with Alcaraz in that category and placing both men second among active players behind Djokovic. The only Masters 1000 events Sinner has yet to win are Madrid and Rome — both of which are next on the calendar.

Sinner has now won his past 17 matches and is on a 22-match winning streak at Masters 1000 events. He entered the week having already captured titles at Indian Wells and Miami, and joined Djokovic as the only men to win the first three ATP Masters 1000 tournaments of a season.

In a gracious moment at the trophy ceremony, Alcaraz offered warm words for his rival. “It is impressive what you are achieving right now,” the Spaniard said. “Just one man had won the Sunshine Double and Monte-Carlo and you are now the second. It is something incredible.”

Sinner, reflective in victory, kept the focus on the competitive chess match rather than his own achievements. “We came here trying to get as many matches as possible, getting good feedback before other big tournaments coming up,” he said. “Today was a high level from both of us.”

The clay season now shifts to Barcelona, Madrid and Rome before Roland Garros, where both men will again be among the heavy favourites — and where, almost certainly, their rivalry will produce another chapter.
