Elena Rybakina reaches Stuttgart quarterfinals with straight sets win

Elena Rybakina moved into the quarter-finals of the WTA clay-court event in Stuttgart on Thursday with a straight-sets win over Diana Shnaider, while Mirra Andreeva kept her strong run going to set up a marquee clash with Iga Swiatek.

The top-seeded Rybakina, the 2024 champion in Stuttgart, beat the unseeded Russian 6-2, 6-4 in one hour and 12 minutes. The 26-year-old Kazakh leaned heavily on her serve throughout the match, finishing with nine aces and controlling the key moments against Shnaider, who is ranked 19th in the world.

Shnaider offered more resistance in the second set, but a series of costly double faults at important stages allowed Rybakina to stay in command and close out the match in straight sets. Rybakina now advances to the last eight, where she will face either Leylah Fernandez or Zeynep Sonmez.

Earlier in the day, ninth-ranked Mirra Andreeva extended her winning streak to six matches with a 7-6 (7/3), 6-3 victory over American Alycia Parks in the round of 16. The 18-year-old Russian has carried strong form into Stuttgart after winning a clay-court title in Linz last week.

Andreeva had already made a statement by knocking out defending champion Jelena Ostapenko on Wednesday, and she followed that up with another composed performance to earn a quarter-final meeting with Swiatek. The Polish star opened her clay season with a convincing win over Laura Siegemund on Wednesday and now faces one of the tour’s hottest young players.

Obviously she is a great player, Andreeva said of Swiatek, but added that she plans to approach the match like any other. She also said she was curious to see how the contest would unfold given Swiatek’s long track record of success on clay.

Karolina Muchova also reached the quarter-finals after recovering from a poor start to defeat Elise Mertens 1-6, 6-3, 6-0. The Czech turned the match around emphatically after dropping the opening set and finished with a dominant deciding set to move into the last eight.

Her compatriot Linda Noskova had a far more straightforward path, crushing Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-1, 6-1 to set up a quarter-final showdown with Elina Svitolina. Svitolina booked her place in the next round on Wednesday with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Germany’s Eva Lys.

Later on Thursday, world number three Coco Gauff was scheduled to begin her Stuttgart campaign against Liudmila Samsonova as she looked to make a strong start in her bid for a first title at the event.

With Rybakina advancing, Andreeva surging, and Swiatek waiting in the wings, Stuttgart is quickly shaping into one of the early highlights of the clay-court season.
