Aryna Sabalenka has withdrawn from next week’s Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, delaying the start of her clay-court season after an injury she says she suffered following her Miami Open title run.
The world No. 1 announced the decision Thursday, saying she was unable to recover in time for one of her favorite stops on tour.
Sabalenka said she was disappointed to miss the WTA 500 event, which begins April 13, and noted her strong connection to the tournament and its fans. Stuttgart has been one of the most consistent events of her career, even if the title has remained out of reach. She has reached the final there four times in the past five years but has never lifted the trophy.
The Belarusian did not specify the exact nature of the injury, only saying that she had tried everything possible to be ready. Her withdrawal comes just days after a dominant hard-court stretch that ended with the Miami Open crown, a result that capped a major spring swing and reinforced her place at the top of the women’s game.
Her absence removes one of the headline names from Stuttgart and reshapes the draw before the clay season fully gets underway. Sabalenka has long been a major factor at the event, where her power game has repeatedly carried her deep into the week despite the faster indoor clay conditions and a field that usually includes many of the tour’s biggest stars.
For Sabalenka, the bigger question now is timing. Stuttgart was set to be her first clay-court event of 2026, and skipping it means her buildup to the larger tournaments in Madrid, Rome, and Roland Garros begins with less match play than expected.
That may not prove damaging in the long run, but it does add uncertainty to the early part of her clay campaign. This is an inference based on her withdrawal from what was scheduled as her clay-season opener.
Even so, Sabalenka’s recent form means she will remain one of the central figures to watch once she returns. For now, though, Stuttgart will move forward without the top seed and without one of the event’s most familiar contenders for the winner’s car.
