Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the Madrid Open, a setback that further disrupts his clay-court buildup with the French Open now little more than a month away. The ATP and tournament organizers confirmed today that the 24-time Grand Slam champion will miss the April 22 to May 3 event in the Spanish capital because of injury.
In a message posted on social media, Djokovic said he would not be able to compete in Madrid this year and was continuing his recovery in hopes of returning soon. The 38-year-old is still dealing with the shoulder issue that already forced him to miss recent stops in Miami and Monte Carlo.
Djokovic has not played since his fourth-round loss to Jack Draper at Indian Wells in March. Before that, he reached the Australian Open final in February and is 7-2 for the 2026 season.
The Serbian is a three-time Madrid champion and had still been hoping to compete, saying that he was struggling physically with an injury. His next scheduled event is Rome in May, leaving him short on match play as Roland Garros approaches on May 24.
